Encounters with open education include

  • free online resources (coding sites, blogs, open library resources, actual libraries),
  • MOOC on Coursera and FutureLearn (mainly for ID research)
  • free webinars/seminars on ID subjects

They’re good for just-in-time support on generic things like coding questions, but I found the online resources a little bit shallow when it came to finding more in-depth answers to questions. You also have to wade through a lot of sales pitches to get to the good stuff, especially in elearning or with learning management.

I’m using open resources more frequently in my current role to enhance and promote workplace skills. But our learners want less ‘generic’ learning and more specialised stuff. Not sure if open can cater for this.
